Review Beaufort County’s Health Rankings, learn about Healthy Places NC and share your ideas about health in Beaufort.

These events are open to anyone!
We will host three community forums in different parts of the county. Come to any of the following gatherings to share your ideas about how to improve the health of your community.

What is it?
All residents are inivted to the Health Forums. These forums are an opportunity for the Trust to share information about health in Beaufort County and hear your ideas about how best to improve health and health care in your community. We will also be talking about play deserts to inform the two KaBOOM! playgrounds coming to Beaufort County later this year.
If you care about the health of people in your family and community, this forum is for YOU. Youth are also welcome.

Why is the Trust holding the events in Beaufort County?
The Trust is a statewide private foundation focused on improving the quality of life and quality of health for individuals across North Carolina. Last year, we announced Healthy Places NC, a long-term initiative to improve the health and overall quality of life for people in rural areas of North Carolina, and Beaufort County is one of the first three counties we have invitated to participate. We plan to invest $100 million over 10 years in 10 to 15 rural North Carolina counties. As part of our Healthy Places NC work, we are partnering with experts from the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, a national program, to explore and understand Beautfort County’s health ranking.
How can you get involved?
We want to work with community members for the long-term to understand local challenges, improve the overall health of the area and promote active living and healthy eating. Come to the forum to learn more and share your ideas.

MomsRising’s life-sized Chutes and Ladders game will be on the mall of the General Assembly for the event. The board highlights the investments that move NC’s children ahead–investments like early learning, education, child care, infant mortality prevention, and health care. It’s a fun, powerful way to remind our communities and leaders that investing in kids means investing in NC’s future.

The Raleigh Chutes and Ladders event is part of a statewide tour, a series of creative on-the-ground events designed to educate our communities and decision-makers about the investments that are essential to ensuring that all of NC’s children get the start they need to succeed and to building a strong NC economy. The Chutes and Ladders game will be coming to the following communities:

What has come to light in the ensuing coverage is a significant lack of awareness and/or understanding of the breadth and depth of the decades of rigorous scientific study. Tim Bartik, an economist with the W.E. Upjohn Institute and author of Investing in Kids, provides an amazing overview of the research on early education in response to several recent news stories.

Early childhood supporters have long touted the findings of the Perry Preschool and Abecedarian programs. And with good reason—these were rigorous studies that demonstrated powerful results for the children who participated. It seems the longevity of these studies, the very thing that makes them so significant, is also their weakness as there has been plenty of time for inaccurate messages to be repeated to the point that they have become “truths” for some.

In his latest blog posting, Bartik cites the hundreds of studies that have been undertaken and discusses sample size, return on investment, short and long-term effects, replication, scalability, and fade out. He concludes:

“Your average American state government, or local school district, can successfully carry out large-scale preschool programs. To do so, that state or local government agency must be willing to spend a reasonable amount per student, have well-trained and paid teachers, have reasonable class sizes, and have a good curriculum that focuses on both cognitive and social skills. But if those elements of quality are present, pre-K programs can achieve significant short-run and long-run benefits both for former participants, and for our economy and society as a whole.”
