Activity Corner Colorful Papier-Mache Egg Make a jumbo egg with a hidden stash of goodies inside!
Materials: 4-inch balloon Assorted trinkets Tape Strong Cord or dental floss 1 cup of all-purpose flour 1 1/4 cups of water Newspaper cut into 5-inch strips Pin Tempera paints and brushes
Time needed: Weekend Project 1. Put the trinkets into the balloon through the neck, then blow up and knot the balloon. Tape an end of the cord to the center of the balloon and wrap it once around the middle. 2. Mix together the flour and water to make a smooth paste. Individually dip newspaper strips into the paste, skim off the excess with your fingers, and lay the strips over the cord to cover the balloon. 3. Wrap the cord around the balloon a second time and cover with another layer of newspaper strips. Smooth the top layer with your fingers. Trim the untaped cord end so that it is 2 inches long, but do not pasted it down. 4. Set the balloon on a wire rack until it is completely dry (about 24 hours). 5. Then push a pin through one end of the shell to pop the balloon. Finally, paint the egg and let it dry. (Note: Be sure to remove the deflated balloon as soon as your child cracks open the egg.)
